The puzzles are challenging, and often require a different perspective using the environment of the island to find a solution. The environment often determines the solution for the puzzle: shadows, perspective, light, and sound can all come into play. Soon you’ll discover that the lush and colorful island surrounding these puzzle panels is not just decoration. The genius comes in the inventiveness and sometimes devilish difficulty of "The Witness’" many variations. Almost every puzzle in the game, and there are hundreds and hundreds of them, involves drawing a line through a grid. Each panel offers a variation on a grid-based maze, where the object is to draw an unbroken line from the start to the end. You, the unnamed player, are set loose upon a beautiful, mysterious island, its landscape festooned with computer display panels. If you don’t like puzzles, this game is not for you. Each player can judge if it is an artistic achievement, but I can’t imagine anyone denying that it has a wonderful, massive array of great puzzles. "The Witness" is a labor of love and a product of deep intellectual ambition that aspires to deliver a very specific vision of what video games can be.
